    Towards Sparking Global Conversations

The Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange (YaleGALE) is a strategic initiative of the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) that seeks the advancement of higher education through alumni engagement and volunteer leadership. YaleGALE volunteers share best practices in alumni relations and foster rich cultural understanding with alumni from other world leading universities.

Almost all of the members of a YaleGALE delegation are alumni volunteers for Yale – not administrators, faculty or staff. As volunteers, they have given much of their time and their talent, and yes – of their treasure. They are representative of the thousands of Yale alumni throughout the world who give the gifts of their time to plan, organize, and conduct programs for other alumni. They have paid their own way (with their own money) to be a part of this delegation – and they have written these materials.

The writings collected here provide background information for you about the various ways in which alumni volunteer for Yale, and thus various ways in which Yale conducts alumni relations. These writings are not intended to be exhaustive, complete, or the final word on each subject. Rather, they are meant to further our dialogue. Each piece provides a brief overview of a type of volunteer effort which the writer(s) knew intimately. Each provides an invitation to begin a deeper conversation about that topic.

Volunteers are a crucial bridge between Yale and its alumni through many interrelated roles. At Yale, fundraising is conducted through the Development Office which, though a separate organization than alumni relations, collaborates with the AYA to further University goals. In addition, some of Yale’s communications with alumni come from yet other distinct entities. However, most of these efforts involve alumni volunteers – and many alumni volunteer for a number of these efforts through a variety of these organizations.
